Do you keep your car shiny and clean—inside and out? Do you know how to clean your car’s engine bay? Most people forget to lift the hood while cleaning a car. Your vehicle’s engine bay houses all the essential parts of your engine. Your home needs cleaning, and so does your engine bay. A dirty engine can hamper your vehicle's overall performance. Keep reading our car engine cleaning tips, such as the necessary materials and steps for effective cleaning.
The Equipment List
You won’t need to access any heavy-duty items to ensure a clean engine bay. Most of the materials are common household objects that are easy to find. Make sure you have a spray bottle containing a mixture of soap and water, a degreaser cleaning spray, brushes of different sizes with soft bristles, a garden hose and low-pressure spray nozzle, microfibre cloths, baking soda, and plastic.
The Procedure
Cleaning can only begin if your engine is completely cold and the negative battery terminal needs to be disconnected. All battery components, i.e., battery, alternator, ignition wires, air intake and control unit, must be covered in plastic.
The cleaning process shouldn’t take more than an hour to complete. Use a soft brush to remove any debris from the area, and use the degreasing solution to the oily areas. Gently spray the area with water, but avoid the electrical components. Mix a solution of water and baking soda to neutralize battery terminal corrosion.
The engine must be wiped down with a microfibre cloth. Once completed, remove the plastic coverings and reconnect the negative battery on the terminal. Start the engine to check that all the components are in working order.
The Advantages
Cleaning your engine regularly can help detect leaks in time and prevent further damage. A neglected engine can accumulate dirt and grime, causing corrosion and general wear and tear. Dirt can also affect your engine’s overall performance, hampering air distribution throughout the engine and resulting in poorer fuel efficiency.
Poor maintenance also affects the lifespan of your engine, especially for off-road vehicles. When the engine is cleaned regularly, the electrical components are also given TLC, lengthening their longevity. A clean engine can also help with the vehicle's value, helping you get the best-selling price.
