Powertrain and Capability

All trucks in the 2020 Ram 1500 Classic lineup share the same pair of powertrain options. As standard, the Classic comes with a 3.6L V6 engine creating a healthy 305 horsepower and 269lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a choice of rear-wheel drive, part-time all-wheel drive, or full-time all-wheel drive.

The base engine is plenty powerful enough for medium duty work, but if you need significantly better performance, the higher-level option makes an excellent choice. Built around a stunning 5.7L HEMI V8 mill paired with an optimized six-speed transmission, this configuration pumps out 395 horsepower and 410lb-ft of torque to make light work of the heaviest jobs.

Towing and Payload Capacities

The real test of a pickup is in the amount of haulage it can handle during the working day, and here the Ram scores highly. All 2020 Classic trims can carry up to 857kg in payload, depending on the choice of pickup bed size and suspension tuning options.

For towing, the engine choice has a large impact. The base V6 engine can haul up to 2,164kg in trailer weight, while the V8 increases the capacity dramatically to an impressive 7,246kg.

Interior and Technology

The main attraction of the Classic range is how it pares down unnecessary features to the working essentials, and this shows up clearly in the entry level Tradesman trim which offers little in the way of advanced interior tech. If you're looking for a down-to-earth truck with no unwanted extras, the Tradesman trim is the one to go for.

However, move up to the higher trims such as the Warlock and plenty of new options become available, including an 8.4" touchscreen powered by the Uconnect system and offering full navigation capability.

Higher trims also add active safety and driver assist features, such as Ram's ParkSense rear parking assistance system.
